Strange Times

07:18 PM

Strange Times Most of the songs that I have written so far have been written with a melody as the basis. In this case, I started with a chord progression. I used a non-standard chord progression with an explicitly deviation from the standard scale chords at the end of each phrase, giving it a remarkable sound. When mixing this song, I wanted to experiment with more dynamics while still using only a minimum number of instruments: only the piano and the cello. I feel that I succeeded. It is a bit of different song than my previously written songs, but I hope you like it as much as I do. I named it “Strange Times” to reflect both the strange times we now live in as well as the varieties of tempos used in this song.

Chéad Remix featuring Wilfred van Setten

07:07 PM

Chéad My younger brother Wilfred has been playing the trumpet and cornet (a smaller trumpet) for years as part of several marching bands. So naturally, I asked him come and record the trumpet track of my first song Chéad. We finally managed to do so last Thursday. I just finished remixing the song with his trumpet parts in and some other adjustments. Please let me know what you think of this remix by posting a comment below.

This Day

10:51 AM

Today is the day that the biggest sports event of the world starts, the 2012 Olympic Games. I am normally not a huge sports fan, but I am looking forward to watching this event. So, I thought it might be appropriate to release a song I wrote called “This Day” today. It is namely a song that has a bigger sound (more symphonic) than most of my songs so far. I hope you like it.

The Lost Tear

10:37 AM

The Lost Tear I wrote this song a couple of weeks ago when I was not feeling very well. My health has given me problems for a long time and at that time everything played up at the same time. I am doing a bit better now, and in the end it helped me write this song called “The Lost Tear”. The title refers to how beautiful music can sometimes cause one single tear to roll down from my eye.

Night of the Comet with Choir

12:39 PM

Night of the Comet Since a couple of days, I have access to a new instrument library which includes a beautiful choir. For that reason, I made a new version of the song “Night of the Comet” with a choir part in the second half of the song. I believe that this gives the second part of the song more body.

The Irish Gene

01:04 PM

The Irish Gene I have been a fan of Irish and Celtic music for years. So it is no wonder that my own music will be influenced by it. With this song however, I explicitly wanted to write an Irish flavored song. I named it “The Irish Gene” as Frances Black once told me that I must have something Irish in me, seeing how much I am influenced by and love Ireland and its culture. However, as far as I know my family is 100% Dutch. So maybe there exists something like an gene that makes one love Ireland and I have it.

Summer Sun Demo

09:31 AM

Today is the official start of the summer and the longest day of the year. But here in the Netherlands, it doesn’t look like summer at all. It’s very cloudy and rain is to be expected. And we already had a spring that looked more like an autumn. Hopefully, my new demo will give you the feeling of a bit of Summer Sun and lets hope that we do get to see a lot of the real sun this summer. In this song, I also experimented for the first time with a harmony in the melody. I hope you like it.

Night of the Comet Demo

10:31 AM

Night of the Comet is a somewhat dark song with a violin as the main instrument and the piano as a secondary instrument. The song is the first in which I use an explicit change of key within the song. I hope you like it.

The River Flows Demo

02:01 PM

When writing this song, I wanted to create a nice slow song. I feel that I succeeded. The song has a really nice “flow” in my opinion (hence the title). It only took me a while to determine which instrument to use as the main instrument in the second part of the song. After several experiments, I decided to go with the English Horn. That instrument already has a nice lazy sound. I hope you like the song. Let me know via a comment to this post.

Red Moon Demo

06:29 PM

I wrote this song several weeks ago. However, every time I listened to it, I had the feeling that something was not quite right. In the end, the solution was extremely simple, but as is often the case, simple solutions are hard to find. I just changed the tempo and removed one note and now it is the way I want it to be. The title doesn’t have a specific meaning this time, it is just the first thing that I thought of for this song. I’d love to hear what you think of it.
